The natural environment and tourism in the area

The Pla de l’Estany, and in particular Banyoles, is a sports city with outstanding nationally recognized brand sport destination (DTE) by Tourism of the Generalitat of Catalonia. Needless to say, is the perfect place for activities such as rowing, canoeing, swimming, the triathlons, cycling, horse riding, athletics and other sports where you can enjoy the beautiful environment that we are halfway between the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees.

The lake is the main sign of identity of Banyoles is the set of Spain’s most important area and valuable in a geological, ecological, landscape and cultural aspect.

The town grew around the monastery of St. Esteve around the ninth century leading to the current city of leaving inheritance stone streets, art, squares and canals out of the pond also created by some monks to irrigate their crops.

Besalú is one of the most important and best preserved medieval Catalonia. Its geographical location helped it install it as human population in distant times and has been a meeting place of different cultures that have enriched the architectural heritage of the town.

While strolling the streets and squares, which maintain a strong medieval flavor you know and visit the different assets that make it so unique.

Besalú is a town in the region of the Garrotxa, located at 150 meters and has an area of 4.81 km2. As the source says, Bisuldunum was a fortress between two rivers: the Fluvià south and north Capellades. Enjoy good communication to meet at the crossroads between three regions: Alt Empordà, Pla de l’Estany and Garrotxa. Besalú began to acquire importance as the capital of an independent county after the death of Wilfred the Hairy (902), condition that was lost in die Bernard III -son of Ramon Berenguer III- without children, as a result, the county of Besalú became the home in Barcelona. In 1966 was declared “National Historic-Artistic” for its great architectural value.

Sights: Roman Bridge, the Jewish quarter, the Miqvé, the portal of the Jews, the Monastery of St. Pere, the Hospital of St. Julià, the royal court, and many other places with great charm and tourist appeal.

Figueres is located in the northeast of Catalonia. With a population of 45,000 inhabitants, is the largest city near the border with France, and articulates an important node communications that make the entrance and stopping point for travelers and tourists entering and leaving in Spain. Located in the center of an extensive fluvial plain, Figueres is the capital of the region of Alt Empordà, its socio-cultural and economic center. The tourist vocation of the region became the center of Figueres on the Costa Brava, one of the most important tourist areas in Catalonia.

Sights: Dali museum, Sant Ferran Castel, Cusí house, Puig-Soler house or Sallera house (modernist), Bonaterra house, The Cafè Progrés house and the Polideseia house (neoclassical), The Sant Sebastià chapel, and if it rests some time, don’t doubt and visit the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and enjoy nature.
